Psalm 127
A picture of archers defending a gateway that attackers have broken through.

Introduction

Psalm 127 is a very short psalm. It is not the shortest psalm, but it may well be the most cryptic. It seems to have two unrelated halves, with the first half being about building and laboring, and the second half being about children.

Most people recognize that Solomon, the author, was not psychotic but indeed very subtle, so there must be some connection between these two halves. Most people see that connection as "house", at the start of the first half, and "children", at the start of the second half. So the message they see is something about raising a houseful of godly children. This is not correct.

We will see that Solomon's meaning is much more spiritual.

Verses

Unless Yahweh builds the house,
They labor in vain who build it;
Unless Yahweh watches the city,
The watchman keeps awake in vain.
2 It is in vain that you rise up early,
That you sit out late,
O you who eat the bread of painful labors;
For in this manner, He gives sleep to His beloved.
3 Behold, children are an inheritance of Yahweh,
The fruit of the womb is a reward.
4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior,
So are the children of one’s youth.
5 How blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them;
They will not be ashamed
When they speak with enemies in the gate. (Psalm 127:1-5)

Three "Vain"'s

The first thing to notice is that the word "vain" is used three times. This will help us to sort out what is being said in the first section.

The point is that people do all of these things, and so does God. We humans build things, we watch over them to keep them safe, and we suffer so they can succeed and have peace. God wants to do these things as well - for us and with us. If we try to do these things by ourselves, we have deluded ourselves into thinking they can succeed the way we want.

Some people want to do the planning and building and then have God bless what they have done. That isn't what God wants. He wants to be the chief planner and builder.

Arrows and Gates

Arrows and gates are so far removed from our time that we don't fully understand what Solomon is saying here.

Every city of sufficient size had a wall around it to keep out dangerous people, from individual criminals to raiding parties to conquerors. The gates of a city were the "holes" in the wall around it. The people of the city and all the merchants with their wares would come and go through the gates. The gates were necessary, but they were a weak spot.

Throughout time, different forms of doors were used to secure the gate, and different methods were used to secure the doors from the attackers. All attackers would test the doors of the gateways to see if they could be breached.

One of the things you would do to protect the doors of the gate is to station archers to fire arrows at the attackers who were at the door(s) of the gate. There would also be archers just inside the gates, in case the attackers broke through. Now, you could just shout out to the attackers, "Go away! We don't want what you are selling," but that was usually not effective. Therefore you let the arrows do the speaking. That helped the attackers understand your point better.

That is the straightforward meaning of the words in the verse, "when they speak with enemies in the gate."

The Second Section

The second section seems to pivot to the unrelated topic of children. There is no pivot. If God (with you) built your house, watched over your city, and sacrificed for your beloved, then your reward will be that your beloved will bear children who are proud (unashamed) of what you have done and will defend it against attackers.

You will also have many of them - a quiver full of them. A quiver is a container for holding arrows. Your children will be the voices that pointedly tell the attackers to go away.

The Spiritual Meaning

So far, this psalm has been a good message about physical life. Let God direct everything you do, and you will be blessed with people who will continue what you started. But that isn't really where Solomon is going.

What he says can be understood spiritually and summarized this way. If God (and you) build your spiritual house, watch over your spiritual city, and sacrifice for your spiritually beloved, then you will have spiritual children. When people come bearing ungodly ideas, they will feel the sharp sting of rebuke from your children.
